Daily Wire Tip March 5: Difference Between Silver Plate and Sterling Silver
Daily Wire Jewelry Making Tip
March 05, 2010
Question:
I have made rings with sterling silver wire. In less a then a week all the silver was gone. I am having to replace the rings. The ring turns brown and their is no silver on them why?
Answer:
I gather that you mean you have made jump rings? It doesn’t sound like the silver you are using is genuine, .925 sterling silver but rather, silver plate. Check with your supplier to see if you did order sterling silver, as there may have been a mix-up when processing your order.

Another thought, maybe there’s something in the atmosphere, or something she’s doing, that causes them to tarnish very rapidly if they are sterling, and they may just need a good cleaning and then to be kept from whatever is causing this. Of course, a week is awful quick, isn’t it?
