Question:

Dale, I have your prong ring DVD. Your procedure for measuring the depth of the culet was shown on the DVD. You came up with 5mm and added 10mm. I have viewed the video over and over, and I am lost on getting 5mm. The gem has a slope just below the girdle then onto the pavilion. Are you looking through the ruler to see the culet? Please let me know as I want to get proficient at wirewrap rings.

Answer:

Junius, to make this as easy as possible, let’s visualize. When measuring the depth of the culet, if the stone were to sit on its point on a workbench, you measure from the workbench straight up through the air, to the bottom edge of the girdle. The length of the pavilion is not the same as the depth; it is longer. Hope this helps!

Dale, thank you so much for the graphic picture so that we beginners can begin to understand the language of jewelry making as a craft. What would we do without you? Cry a lot…and spend endless hours researching.
