Daily Wire Tip: Converting Carats to Grams
Daily Wire Jewelry Making Tip
Question:
I would like to know how to convert carats to grams. Is it possible, or is the weight too small?
-Linda in Sherman, Texas
Answer:
Not at all, Linda. 1 carat = 1/5 gram, so 5 carats = 1 gram.
Simply divide the number of carats by 5 to find the grams. So a gemstone that weighs 53 carats would be 10.6 grams.

Some factoids: Carat and Karat derive from Carob – a fruit indigenous to the Middle East. Most websites state that the small, very hard seed was used as a standard for gemstones. Other websites state that the seeds were never specifically used. The word carat comes from the Greek – keraton (which also means little horn) but is ultimately from the Arabic – charuv – dry. Just thought you should know.
How very cool Elliot! Thanks so much for sharing this fun trivia.
Those seeds were used as a standard for measuring gemstones because each seed had exactly the same size and weight as the other. They all were (are) all exactly the same!
