Question:

What is the best pattern to use for a prong set ring?

-Pat in Lewistown, Illinois

Answer:

In my opinion, true prongs need to form to whatever stone is being set into a handcrafted wire ring design. This means they need to go over part of the crown, around the girdle and then hug the pavilion from about one third to halfway down.

Seriously, the prong ring with a cut stone is an amazing, but extremely specific design and I only teach it to very advanced students. The reason is because the measurements are so very specific to get it right. There is no room for correction. In my Ring Series, I did a Prong Ring DVD (#5) that covers all of these details.
