You’re getting 2 hammers in 1 with this jeweler’s hammer: use the ball pein (rounded) side to give texture to wire or make rounded areas. Use the smooth flat end to flatten wire ends (perfect to make your own headpins). Also handy for leaving impressions, such as striking a metal surface with a stamp or a coin.

    The first hammer I put into my jewelry kit was actually a double-ended gunsmith’s hammer—3/8″ round nylon on one end and brass on the other. I used it, along with an old cutting board, to flatten and harden my pieces. I hadn’t thought of using it along with my stainless steel block for shaping wire. As both ends are flat it doesn’t have the texturing advantage of the hammer above but it was “free.”
