Byzantine Chain Maille Swarovski Crystal Earrings

Edgy and dramatic, bold black and silver earrings. This byzantine chain maille weave has an intricate lacy pattern. The black rings are niobium which has a matte finish and contrasts beautifully with the gloss of the Swarovski cosmic square.

Instructions

Step 1

Place 2 closed, small silver rings on an open black ring and close the ring. Add another black ring in the same place as the 1st one. Take an open black ring and go through both of the previous black rings. Add another black ring in the same place.

Step 2

The chain is now a 2-2-2 link chain. The first link is the 2 silver rings and the 3rd link is the 2 black rings last added. The rings in the 3rd link are folded back towards the 1st link, one on each side of the chain. Take an open black ring and parting the 2 rings from the 2nd link go through the folded back rings from the 3rd link and close the ring. Add another black ring in the same place.

Step 3

Add 2 black rings to the last 2 rings. Add another 2 black rings to the just added rings to form a 2-2-2 chain. As in step 2, the 2 rings from the 3rd link have to be folded back, one on each side. Take an open black ring and parting the rings from the 2nd link go through both of the folded back rings from the 3rd link. Add another black ring in the same place.

Step 4

Take an open large silver ring and go through the last 2 black rings and through the middle of one of the Swarovski squares and close the ring. Add another large silver ring in the same place.

Step 5

To make the ear wires, cut the wire in half. Form a loop like the letter P at one end of one of the wire pieces. This loop needs to be big enough to hold 2 x 1mm thick jump rings. Holding this loop against the mandrel form the wire around the mandrel to create the curve of the ear wire. Bend the tail of the ear wire and trim. Make 2.

Step 6

Attach the ear wires to the 2 small silver rings at the top of the earrings.
