Interlocking Coil Bangle

Create these adjustable bangles using only two gauges of wire and any type of beads. Perfect for beginners, this tutorial will show you how to create a pretty, interlocking knot effect with coiled detail.

Instructions

Step 1

Cut two lengths of 1mm/18 gauge wire approximately 12 inches/30cm each.

Step 2

Bring the ends of the wires together to find the center and bend.

Step 3

Using bail step pliers (or something cylindrical like a pen) form a bend in each of these wires roughly the size of your bead.

Step 4

Cut a length of approximately 100cm of 0.4mm/26 gauge weaving wire and find the center of the weaving wire. Attach the center of this weaving wire to the center of the bend in the 1mm/18 gauge base wire.

Step 5

Start to coil around the bend using both tail ends of the weaving wire to coil (continuously wrap) in both directions. Coil so that there is around 2cm of coiled wire on each side of the bend, ensuring they are equal on each side.

Step 6

Repeat this coil on the other base wire with another length of 0.4mm/26 gauge weaving wire, ensuring it matches the first.

Step 7

Interlock both base wires together, by bringing the ends of base wire through the coiled bend of the other.

Step 8

Carefully pull the uncoiled ends of the base wires away from each other to draw together the coiled bend so that they interlock, creating a knot effect.

Step 9

Use the tail ends of the weaving wire to wrap around once or twice the coiled section to bind them together and hold the knot in place.

Step 10

Wrap the weaving wire three times around the base wire to secure, do this to all four ends of the base wires.

Step 11

Add one bead onto one of the 0.4mm/26gauge weaving wires.

Step 12

Position the bead in between the base wires and attach to the opposite side with the weaving wire by wrapping three times.
(If you prefer you can trim off the weaving wire without the bead on this sides of the coil and tuck in to secure, adding the remaining beads to the same length of weaving wire or)

Step 13

Bring the weaving wire from the opposite side, that the bead wasn't attached to, through the bead and wrap three times on the opposite base wire to secure.

Step 14

Add the next bead on to the 0.4mm/26 gauge weaving wire and position in between the base wires, so that it sits next to the first bead and wrap the weaving wire onto the base wire on the opposite side to secure.

Step 15

Bring the weaving wire, from the opposite side, through this bead and wrap three times to secure onto the opposite base wire.

Step 16

Repeat to add on the desired amount of beads (I have used ten 6mm round beads on each side in this tutorial) .

Step 17

Add on the same amount of beads to the opposite side of the coiled centre, using the same technique .

Step 18

You can pinch the coiled center with pliers above the beads to draw the wires slightly towards each other and create a desired shape to your interlocking coiled knot.

Step 19

Once you have added all of your beads, trim off the remaining weaving wires and tuck in any sharp ends.

Step 20

Position the bail step pliers above the last bead and curve one of the base wires around to form a loop.

Step 21

Trim the base wire leaving a few millimeters to create a swirl with round nose pliers.

Step 22

Do the same on the other side of the bangle so that the swirls are matching.

Pro Tip: When creating your swirls, doing each of these steps to both sides of the bangle, will help you create symmetry.

Step 23

Position the bail step pliers above the swirl and bring the base wire around the bail step pliers to the other side.

Step 24

Create another loop with the base wire.

Step 25

Repeat this on the other side of the bangle.

Step 26

Use round nose pliers to create a swirl at each end of the bangle.

Step 27

Using a small length of 0.4mm/26 gauge weaving wire, bind together both swirls at each end of the bangle to secure them together.

Step 28

Trim off any excess 0.4mm/26 gauge wire and tuck into the outside of the bangle to prevent any sharp edges. .

Step 29

The bangle can now be shaped using a bracelet mandrel, something cylindrical or your fingers, by applying gentle pressure to the center of the bangle at the coil and gradually bending the ends around towards each other.
