Step 1
Measure the circumference of your stone and add 5" to the measurement to determine the length of your (x5) 20 gauge segments of wire. Next, mark the center of the wire with a ruler as well as 1/4" to each side.

Now, wrap your 28 gauge weaving wire around the bottom base wire 3 times to start the Modified Soumak weave. (I'm working from the spool). Next, wrap the weaving wire around the bottom two base wires one time. From there, bring the weaving wire back in between the two wires and around the next two base wires. Then, wrap the wire around the 3rd and 4th base wires. Wrap the weaving wire around the last to base wires and finally around the top base wire one time.

Start the next set of weaves by wrapping the weaving wire around the bottom base wire one time. Repeat step 2 until you have woven from the first sharpie mark to the last mark.

Once you've woven to the other end of your sharpie marks, wrap the weaving wire around the bottom base wire 3 times to complete the weave.

Cut off the excess weaving wire with your flush cutters.

Using a dowel or ring mandrel, begin to shape the bottom of the frame.

Set the stone in the frame to determine its shape.

Grab your flat nose or chain nose pliers and straighten the wire at the top of the teardrop.

Bend the back base wires inward slightly to create a back to hold the stone.

Wrap the weaving wire around the top of the teardrop shape 3 times.

Then, holding the base wires together, wrap the weaving wire around the wires to secure them together.

Wrap the weaving wire around the front left base wire one time to secure the wires. Next, spread the wires to each side, (3 on the left, 5 on the right), leaving the front two wires straight up. Grab the weaving wire again and wrap it around the bottom base wire, then around both wires and again around the top wire. Repeat this modified soumak weave until your weave is about 1 inch long. (Do not cut the weaving wire at this point).

Now it's time to set your stone. Place it in the frame, then gently bend the wires forward with your chain nose pliers to secure the stone.

Grab a mandrel, pencil or dowel and bend the bail towards the back. Then, wrap the weaving wire around the same collection of wires like before 3 times. To secure the wrap, wrap the weaving wire around one of the back base wires 3 times and cut off the excess.

Spread the bail's base wires and then wrap them both around the same collection of wires as the weaving wire. Trim the wires with your flush cutters and tuck them in at the sides.

Next, grab the last remaining wires and curve them along the previous wires. Then, create a small loop with them both, and curve them as shown, on the front of the cab.

Grab a 5" piece of 28 gauge wire and wrap it around the front frame wire 3 times. Scoot the wrapped weaving wire up next to the top swirl and secure it to the frame by wrapping the weaving wire around it 2 times. Secure the wrap by wrapping the weaving wire around the frame wire 3 times.
