Quick Wired Bead Ring

Quick Wired Bead Ring

Designed by Albina Manning © 2011

Skill Level: Beginner/All

Technique: Round wire

I really like playing with round wire and sometimes I enjoy a vintage look by adding a patina by using liver of sulfur (LOS). This ring design is easy to make and can be altered by changing the color of the bead or by using a colored craft wire!

Quick Wired Bead Ring

Materials

  • 20-gauge round dead soft wire, 2 feet (61 cm)
  • One 10mm bead

Tools

Instructions

  1. Cut a 2 foot (61 cm) long piece of 20-gauge round dead soft wire. Place a 10mm round bead in the middle of the wire. Bend the wire down as shown.

  2. Place the beaded wire on the ring mandrel at the desired finished size. Keeping the bead in the middle of the wire, wrap each end of the wire once around the ring mandrel. There is now one wire on either side of the bead.

  3. Tightly wrap each wire around the bead, one side at a time and on alternate sides. Your wires will end up in opposite directions.

  4. Continue wrapping each wire around the bead, until you are satisfied with number of wraps or you have at least 2” of wire left on each side of the ring.

  6. On each side of the ring, firmly wrap each wire end around the shank 2 or 3 times. Trim each wire end and use chain nose pliers to tuck each end so it doesn't poke the skin.

  7. Your ring is basically finished!

  8. If you would like to make your ring more interesting, use chain nose pliers to slightly twist and bend some of the wires as shown below.  To really define these bends, you could use liver of sulfur to patina your ring. Simply follow the directions on the LOS container, and then remove any patina you wish with a steel wool pad or other abrasive.
