Creating unique jewelry pieces with double hole beads can be a daunting task. We usually see them set side by side in stretch bracelets, which are beautiful, but why not try something different and make a link with each one and connect them with twisted mobius links. Since each 8" strand contains approximately 20 beads, you could make five bracelets. Try using the links to make a beautiful pair of earrings.

Instructions

Note: It is important to read through the directions before starting.

Steps 1-12 show you how to make one double hole rectangle bead link. Repeat as many times as necessary. If you construct the bracelet shown, it will be 7-3/8" long. Of course, you need to subtract toggle t-bar and "O" ring overlap.

  1. Straighten and cut two 2-5/8" pieces of 20-gauge wire. Mark the center of each. These will be the base wires.

  2. Note: Step 2 and 3 need to be done twice: once on either side of the bead. Straighten and cut two 12" pieces of 26-gauge wire. Center a 2.5mm bead on the wire. Place the bead on the mark on one of the 20-gauge base wires. Wrap both ends of the 26-gauge wire twice around the 20-gauge base wire. This is the center bead.

  3. Slide a 2.5mm bead on one 26-gauge wire tail. Wrap the wire tail around the 20-gauge base wire twice. Repeat on this process other side of the center bead.

Now make sure to go back and perform steps 2 and 3 again, so you have 2 wires with 3 wrapped beads wrapped apiece.

  4. With one unit constructed in Steps 2 and 3, slide a wire into each of the holes on one side of the bead. Slide the wires from the other unit into the holes on the other side of the bead. Make sure that the right wire comes out on top and the left wire comes out on the bottom so that wrapping will be easier. Pull the wrap wires tight to get the 20-gauge base wire as close to the bead as possible.

  5. On one side of the 2.5mm beads, wrap the 26-gauge wire around the 20-gauge base wire, going out from the beads, until you are a scant 1/8" beyond the end of the bead. Repeat for the other three sections.

  6. On one end, bend the wrapped wire sections over the end of the bead. Decide where the center of the bead end is and mark the 20-gauge base wires.

  7. Place the edge of a flat nose pliers over the mark on one of the wires, covering it completely, and bend the 20-gauge wire up at a 90 degree angle. Repeat with the other wire. The bent wires should sit side by side.

  8. You will probably have to wrap the 26-gauge wire around the 20-gauge wire base a few more times on one or more sides. To do so, slightly bend the wires apart.

  9. Tightly wrap the right hand 26-gauge wire three times around the two bent up 20-gauge base wires. Trim the wire tail off on the back side of the unit.

  10. Tightly wrap the left hand 26-gauge wire once around the base of the two bent up 20-gauge base wires. Pull the wrap wire to the front. Thread the tail from the front to the back above the bead and below the base wires. Pull the wrap wire tightly to the back. Trim the wire tail.

  11. Because the wires may slip off center a bit during construction, and beads vary slightly in size, you now need to trim the core wire ends to length. Measure 11/16" out from the center of the wrap you just did and trim off the 20-gauge core wires.

  12. Use step 2 of your 6-step bail forming pliers to bend the two 20-gauge wire ends into loops on either side of the bead.
Note: You can use round nose pliers for this step, but calibrated pliers make perfect-size loops every time.

  13. Straighten and cut a 24" piece of 18-gauge square wire. Tightly twist the wire with an automatic wire twister. Then, wrap the twisted wire around a 7/16" mandrel.

Cut nine large jump rings from the coil. Slightly straighten the rest of the coil. Coil on step 2 of your 6-step bail forming pliers. Cut 2-3 jump rings from this coil. How many you need will depend on the size of your toggle, as well as how long you need the bracelet.
Hint: You can change the length of the bracelet by changing the size of the jump rings.

  14. Attach the links together with three large jump rings using a mobius link design. A mobius link is constructed when each ring added goes through all the previous rings.

  15. Use the smaller jump rings constructed in Step 13 to attach the toggle t-bar to one end of the bracelet. Open the loop on the bead on the other end of the bracelet. Slid on the toggle and close the loops.
